Is fish one of the secrets to shiny coats?
A shiny coat on a dog isn’t just about looks—it’s a sign of good health. When a dog’s fur gleams in the sunlight, it reflects inner well-being. But can feeding Fido more fish help their fur look fantastic? Or is it just social media pseudo-science?
Pass the fish – it’s a fact.
Fish – or, more accurately, some of the essential nutrients found in fish — can help improve skin and coat health.
Fish is a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids.
Sometimes listed on packaging as EPA and DHA, Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties, that support joints, skin and coats. They’re also good for organ function, the immune system, and important for growth and development in young dogs.
They need Omega-6 fatty acids too
Omega-6 fatty acids are also essential for your dog’s skin and coat health. They help maintain a strong skin barrier and shiny fur. Without enough Omega-6s, your dog could develop dry skin, dull fur, and be more prone to allergies and infections.
Since dogs can’t produce Omega-6s themselves, they need to get them from their diet. While Omega-3s are commonly found in fish, Omega-6s are more abundant in plants, nuts, and some animal sources.
More fish in their diets won’t cure skin disease or allergies.
While Omega-3 and Omega-6 can improve skin health and coat quality, they aren’t a cure-all. Mild cases might see improvement, but many dogs need extra help like soothing lotions, probiotics, or medication to fully address skin problems.
A good diet plays a critical role in maintaining the quality of your dog’s skin and coat.
The Nosh Project recipes incorporate fresh, digestible Aussie ingredients, like salmon, barramundi and vegetable oil, and supplemental DHA from the Nourish 27 Meal Balancer to provide all the Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids your dog needs to maintain their healthy skin and coat.
